The Ten Gods (Sipsin): your Saju archetypes, in plain English

The Ten Gods (십신, 十神 — Sipsin) sound mystical, but the idea underneath is refreshingly down-to-earth. In Saju, your chart has a center of gravity: your Day Master (일간), the core "you" that everything else revolves around. Once that anchor is set, every other Heavenly Stem in your chart is understood not on its own, but by its relationship to your Day Master — does it support you, spur you on, ask something of you, or draw energy out of you?

There are ten of those relationships, and each one has a classical name. At Astral Align we translate each into a plain-English psychological archetype, so you get the insight without memorizing the traditional terms. Think of them as ten familiar characters that can show up in the story of who you are.

Where the ten come from: five pairs

The ten aren't a random list. They fall into five pairs — five basic ways another element can relate to your Day Master, each appearing in two forms: a more outward, assertive Yang version and a more inward, refining Yin version. That is why several archetypes come as siblings: the bold, expansive form and its quieter, more measured counterpart. A reading doesn't hand you all ten equally. It looks at which of these show up strongly in your particular chart, which are barely there, and how that mix colors the way you tend to move through the world.

Reading the pairs together

Once you see them side by side, the five pairs start to make sense. The Companion and The Competitor are both about your own footing — one steady and self-possessed, one more restless and competitive. The Artisan and The Performer are two flavors of what you put out into the world — one that flows quietly into craft, one that reaches for an audience. The Challenger and The Administrator both concern responsibility and pressure — one that meets it head-on, one that meets it through structure. The Seeker and The Mentor are two sides of learning and support — one turned inward toward questions, one turned outward toward guidance.

None of these is "good" or "bad." A chart heavy in one archetype may simply suggest a natural leaning, while a chart that balances several can point to a more adaptable style. One useful way to work with the Ten Gods is to treat a strong archetype as a strength to lean into and a thin one as an area you might consciously develop.

A note on the two "resource" archetypes

In the classical tradition, The Adventurer (편재) and The Steward (정재) belong to the pair sometimes labeled the "wealth" relationships. It is worth being precise about what that means here. At Astral Align these describe a temperament — your instinctive relationship to resources, effort, and the material world — and nothing more. The Adventurer can suggest a wide-reaching, opportunity-seeking style that enjoys many irons in the fire; the Steward can suggest a careful, hands-on way of tending what is already in front of you. These are patterns of character, not forecasts of income, and they are never used to predict money, profit, or financial outcomes of any kind.

The same care applies to The Challenger (편관). Its energy is best understood as resolve under pressure — the capacity to focus and rise when the stakes are high. It is a portrait of intensity and inner strength, not a warning of danger or something to fear.

How your chart uses them

Knowing the ten archetypes is only the start. What makes a reading feel specific is which ones actually appear in your chart, how strongly, and where. The same archetype can read differently depending on the pillar it sits in and the elements around it.
