Saju (사주, 四柱) means "the four pillars." It is the Korean tradition of the East Asian Four Pillars of Destiny system — the same lineage the Chinese call BaZi (八字, "eight characters"). Instead of a single zodiac sign, Saju reads the full timestamp of your birth: the year, month, day, and hour you arrived. Each of those four moments becomes a "pillar," and each pillar carries two Eastern signs — a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. Four pillars, two signs each: eight characters that describe how you are built.
The four pillars, quickly
Every pillar looks at the same person from a slightly different distance — from the broad current of your era down to the specific hour you took your first breath.
Because the month and hour pillars turn on the Sun's real position and the exact clock time, an accurate Saju chart needs a real birth time and a real birthplace — not just a date. That is also why the same birthday can produce very different charts for two people born hours apart.
Your Day Master: the center of the chart
The single most important character in Saju is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — your Day Master (일간, 日干). It is the "you" that the rest of the chart revolves around, expressed as one of five elements in either a yang or yin form. A Yang Fire Day Master reads very differently from a Yin Water one: think of it as your core operating style — how you naturally take in the world and act on it.
Where Western astrology hands you a Sun sign, Saju hands you a Day Master and then asks a richer question: how does everything else in your chart support, drain, or challenge it?
The Five Elements
All of Saju runs on the Five Elements (오행, 五行): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They are not just labels — they interact through cycles of generating and controlling one another. A reading looks at which elements you have a lot of, which are thin, and how they push and pull. That balance is where Saju gets its reputation for feeling uncannily specific: it is describing the actual mix you were born with, not a one-size-fits-twelve label.
- Wood — growth, direction, the urge to expand
- Fire — expression, warmth, visibility
- Earth — stability, care, holding the center
- Metal — structure, clarity, refinement
- Water — depth, adaptability, quiet intelligence
The Ten Gods
Once you know your Day Master, every other character in the chart can be described by its relationship to it. Those ten relationships are the Ten Gods (십신, 十神) — the framework Korean readers are famous for leaning on. At Astral Align we translate each one into a plain-English psychological archetype (for example, a challenger, an artisan, a strategist) so you get the insight without needing to memorize the classical terms.
Saju is not the Chinese zodiac
A common mix-up: the "Chinese zodiac" (are you a Rabbit, a Dragon, a Horse?) is only your birth-year animal — one branch of one pillar. Saju uses all four pillars. That is the difference between a single word and a full paragraph about who you are. If you have only ever known your zodiac animal, your Saju chart will feel like meeting yourself in far higher resolution.
What Saju is for — and what it isn't
Traditionally Saju is used two ways: to understand your nature (the standing chart) and to read timing — the decade-long luck cycles (대운, Daewun), the year (세운, Sewun), and even the month. It is prized for timing because it is precise about seasons of momentum and seasons to slow down.
That said, a good reading is a mirror, not a verdict. Saju describes patterns and tendencies you can work with; it does not lock your future or guarantee events. We treat it as a tool for reflection and self-understanding — genuinely useful, and honest about its limits.
