Saju vs BaZi: are they the same thing?

If you have looked into East Asian astrology, you have probably seen both words. Saju (사주, 四柱) is what Koreans call it; BaZi (八字) is the Chinese name. People often ask which one is "real," or which is more accurate — as if they were rival systems. They are not. They are the same tradition, read in two languages.

Same engine, different tradition

Both Saju and BaZi read the Four Pillars of Destiny — a chart drawn from the exact moment you were born. Your year, month, day, and hour each become a "pillar," and each pillar carries two signs: a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. Four pillars, two characters each. That is where the Chinese name comes from — BaZi literally means "eight characters." The Korean word Saju means "four pillars." Two names, one chart.

Because they are built from identical inputs and identical rules, a Saju chart and a BaZi chart for the same birth moment come out the same. The pillars match. The Day Master matches. The Five Elements match. If you have read your Saju chart, you have already read your BaZi.

What is identical

None of this changes the chart itself. A Korean reader and a Chinese reader looking at your pillars are looking at the same eight characters; they may simply reach for different parts of the tradition first, and name them in their own language. Think of it like two doctors trained in the same medicine describing the same X-ray — different vocabulary, same image.

The thing that does change your chart

Here is what actually matters for accuracy, and it has nothing to do with Saju versus BaZi: whether the chart was built from your real birth moment. The month and hour pillars turn on the Sun's true position and the exact clock time, corrected for your longitude — true solar time. A calculator that just maps your birth year to an animal, or ignores your birth time and place, will hand you a shaky chart whether it calls itself Saju or BaZi. So which should you read?

It is not either/or — the chart is the same, so read whichever tradition's framing speaks to you. If the Korean emphasis on the Ten Gods and life-timing resonates, read it as Saju.
